He can't escape his past--or his future.

Bitter and weary, homicide detective Niall Hamarsson burns his last bridge, retreating to the only place he's ever called home.

But murder beats him there.

Sheriff Mat Dempsey is a glass-half-full kind of guy. He returned to the island after his father drowned to take care of his mom. Life is quiet and simple, until Niall Hamarsson's return.

Nothing about Niall Hamarsson is simple.

Maybe Niall's childhood refuge will allow him the space to re-evaluate his future. Maybe he'll be able to keep the kind, competent sheriff at arm's length.

Mat needs Niall to stay away from the investigation, he doesn't want the ex-detective muddying the waters of Hidden Harbor.

Niall's not meddling so much as keeping his hand in. The case is a distraction from the unwanted memories that are popping up like weeds after a rainstorm.

How long will it take for the two of them to realize they work better together than apart? In more ways than one?

The Veiled Intentions trilogy is a dual POV, slow-burn, three-act, romantic suspense about a broody introvert and a somewhat patient Sheriff as they grope their way to a happily ever after.

Great start to a series

Niall Hamarsson, a burned-out Seattle police officer, turned in his resignation and returned to Piedras Island to fix up his grandparents’ home. Niall’s life has not been easy, and his surly personality shows it. Even though his years with his grandparents weren’t easy, it is the only true home he ever had. Mat Dempsey is the sheriff and has his hands full with a murder and several seemingly small incidences. The men are attracted to each other, but personal mindsets keep them apart. Niall does not trust anyone, especially someone who is part of a community that tormented him when was a kid. Mat is not out on Piedras Island. He feels he needs to keep his sexuality under wraps because of his position as an elected official. As circumstances force Mat and Niall together Mat and his mom try to offer Niall help and comfort, but Niall just cannot accept that he is worthy of the concern. The suspense plotline is well developed with clues throughout about what is going on. The suspense story is complete but the promise of a romance is still up in the air. I look forward to continuing the story to see where Mat and Niall’s relationship goes. I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys suspense and police procedurals with a hint of mm romance.
